goings on

hi hi! sorry that my last post was so long ago, and full of silly contraceptive drama. i thought maybe it would go away, but it has surprisingly blossomed into a media shit storm, pardon my french. what decade is it, anyway? that's all i'll say on the topic, i guess. if you're reading this, you probably agree with me anyway so we can talk about other [more fun] things.

for example, new shins:

here is an update with photos that you can glance at while you're listening to the fun song:
dessert and hot toddys with the "j" of pb&j at kramerbooks a week and a half ago.
it was so good to catch up and do some righteous hemhawing
1/2 off falafel, pecan pie, and planets in the sky with the other "pb" of pb&j
we're on a falafel tour of the city with 50% off coupons.

alright team, more over the next few days. i want to fill you in on fun things, like:
1. four days of sinus misery
2. is it spring? is it winter?
3. that one time that i met senators boxer, feinstein, murray, etc etc
4. princess eleanor rose update
and much, much more.

talk to you soon!

xoxo,

making things

we're all young and naive still
we require certain skill
the motive changes like the wind
hard to control when it begins
-the naked and famous

i'm coming to you from the other side of some modestly successful cooking/baking endeavors. last week i was starving and i only had some frozen old bananas so a lightbulb went off and i decided to make cranberry banana muffins from scratch. yeah, that happened. i modified the recipe a little [i don't even know what shortening really is. vegan buttery spread worked just fine. also, craisins do the trick in place of real cranberries. and, cinnamon makes anything better, right?]. anyway, point is, they turned out like something i actually wanted to eat every morning for the next two weeks which i had to because i made a full batch.

that upped my confidence, so the other day i made veggie fried rice with some peanut sauce. i have to give a shout out to michelle though, she showed me how first. then the leftovers were looking unappetizing so i threw in some onion and a smashed up black bean burger and some soy sauce and voila - i had the weirdest tasting concoction ever. maybe black bean burgers don't belong in fried rice. i ate it anyway being the pauper that i am.

this is all to illustrate that i'm not ready to be on my own yet. i could still use a caretaker - you know, someone to take care of my budget and clean the toilet and cook me meals because heaven knows i am really quite bad at it. this is not a pity party - it's true. there is a very real reason i can't be a homemaker, and it's not because i'm some sort of feminist [that's a completely separate thing - i think modern feminism supports the choice to be a homemaker as long as it's actually your deliberate choice]. it's because i don't have the desire to learn to make yummy food and keep the house looking clean. i strongly dislike doing it. i feel like life is passing me by as i do dishes and prepare food that can be purchased premade in the freezer section [or that can be thrown together within 30 seconds as a sandwich]. these activities make me want to cry and i don't know what to do about it.

HELP.
. . . look at the funny squirrel i saw coming home last week. i think he's pretending to be a statue so that i don't notice him. silly little rodent [is it a rodent?].

be here now

don't let your mind get weary
and confused your will be still, don't try
don't let your heart get heavy child
inside you there's a strength that lies

don't let your soul get lonely
child, it's only time, it will go by
don't look for love in faces, places
it's in you, that's where you'll find kindness

company of friends

when i die, let them judge me by my company of friends
let them know me as the footprints that I left upon the sand
let them laugh for all the laughter
let them cry for laughter’s end
but when i die, let them judge me by my company of friends

when i die, let them toast to all the things that i believe
let them raise a glass to consciousness
and not spill a drop for grief
let the bubbles rise at midnight
let their tongues get light as thieves
and when i die, let them toast to all the things that i believe

i believe in restless hunger
i believe in red balloons
i believe in private thunder
in the end i do believe

i believe in inspiration
i believe in lightning bugs
i believe in slow creation
in the end i do believe

i believe in ink on paper
i believe in lips on ears
i believe what’s shared is savored
in the end i do believe

I believe in work on Sundays
i believe in raising barns
i believe in wasting Mondays
in the end i do believe

I believe in intuition
i believe in being wrong
i believe in contradiction

in the end i do believe

i believe in living smitten
i believe all hearts will mend
i believe our book is written

by our company of friends

tornado watch

hey team! ellie and i are reporting from the tail end of a tornado watch for dc. i'm fairly certain that we won't see tornadoes in our region, but if we do then we are quite prepared since we come from hurricane alley, the heart of 'merica (i'm not super proud to claim missouri today, because of this atrocity. i'm not ready to talk about it yet).

happier news is that i filled out a 5 minute survey on diversity at my school and obtained a $15 itunes gift card as a thank you! love it. but what to purchase? i need your feedback! i don't want to waste my free money. should i get the new florence + the machine album? fleet foxes? death cab for cutie? netters neuroscience flashcards for my ipod? feel free to voice your opinion!

also i just did my obligatory etsy search for cute craft items applicable to my current module. apparently the crafting community greatly enjoys brains. my search yielded many cute results!
(arteries of brain look sort of like a monster)
brain slugs
brain skull cap! ingenious!
soap
anyway, that's all. i'm going to learn things now to try to distract myself from abused puppies and possible tornadic events.

much love,

kate and the princess

ps this is what i did to my toe before the Easter brunch (which is a tale for another post) (my toe bled more and felt way worse than the picture shows) (but we all know that i can be a bit of a whiner)

bowl of oranges

the rain, it started tapping on the window near my bed. there was a loophole in my dreaming,
so i got out of it. and to my surprise my eyes were wide and already open.
just my nightstand and my dresser where those nightmares had just been.
so i dressed myself and left then, out into the gray streets.
but everything seemed different and completely new to me.
the sky, the trees, houses, buildings, even my own body.
and each person i encountered, i couldn't wait to meet.
i came upon a doctor who appeared in quite poor health.
i said "{i am terribly sorry but} there is nothing i can do for you
{that} you can't do for yourself."
he said "oh yes you can. just hold my hand. i think that would help."
so i sat with him a while and then i asked him how he felt.
he said, "i think I'm cured. no, in fact, i'm sure.
thank you stranger, for your therapeutic smile."
so that is how i learned the lesson that everyone is alone.
and your eyes must do some raining if you are ever going to grow.
but when crying don't help and you can't compose yourself.
it is best to compose a poem, an honest verse of longing or simple song of hope.
that is why i'm singing...
baby don't worry cause now i got your back. and every time you feel like crying,
i'm gonna try and make you laugh. and if i can't, if it just hurts too bad,
then we will wait for it to pass and i will keep you company
through those days so long and black.
and we'll keep working on the problem we know we'll never solve
of love's uneven remainders, our lives are fractions of a whole.
but if the world could remain within a frame like a painting on a wall.
then i think we would see the beauty.
then we would stand staring in awe at our still lives posed like a bowl of oranges,
like a story told by the fault lines and the soil.

a beautiful song, a sweet video

2.15.2011

a song dedicated to princess eleanor rose

it’s him or me that’s what he said
but i can’t choose between a vegan and a pot head
so i chose you because you’re sweet

and you give me lots of lovin’ and you eat meat

and that’s how you became my only man of the hour

you never lie and you don’t cheat

and you don’t have any baggage tied to your forefeet
do i deserve to be the one who will feed you breakfast, lunch, and dinner

and take you to the park at dawn

will you really be my only man of the hour?

i know you’ll never bring me flowers
flowers they will only die
and though you’ll never take a shower together

i know you’ll never make me cry

you never argue, you don’t even talk
and i like the way you let me lead you

when we go outside and walk

will you really be my only man of the hour?
