how many people can live on planet earth?

this bbc documentary is incredible and terrifying all at the same time. i highly recommend this foray into a huge issue that is easy to push to the back of our privileged minds but will certainly arrive at the forefront in no time flat.

for my part, i support women's access to affordable birth control and only wash my hair once or twice a week.

what can you do to help?

[if you have questions about the hair washing - just ask. dry shampoo has changed my life]

more soon. my effervescent brother benjamin came here for thanksgiving and we had a lovely time.

the christmas decorations are also now up. tis the season!

excuse me while i go study more and listen to some jolly tunes - prolly my go-to: sufjan stevens

spring has indeed sprung

the princess and i headed home a week and a half ago to have some major relaxin:
we spent the majority of our time in kansas with the ever lovely elva lola grandmother, which is a whole other post of its own, but here are some pics from the trip and our escape to kc for a day (los compas! huge dos equis! friends (and alex)! family! we're spoiled!)
ellie beholds our hometown from urban arts and crafts (if you haven't been, go. right now. 2 projects in the works from treasures found there). we certainly miss our town and all it offers in friendship and fun.
shortly after this photo was taken, we were ushered to the airport where we flew on back home. i think the princess and i should be qualifying for a free flight soon. we were greeted by a district where spring had sprung forth in a beautiful abundance. i mean, just look at my patio tree (top center) dripping with bright blossoms, or the forsythia shining golden. the irises i planted are still alive, and i even made it for the tail end of the cherry blossoms. i can't take it. so, so breathtaking.
. . . heaven is an eternal spring.
today i placed a really funny amazon order that contained two books (heaven is here - i love nienie's blog - and health care reform: what it is, why it's necessary, how it works - in cartoon form!), a package of biodegradable princess eleanor poop bags, and 4 oz of silver glitter. ever since i moved to dc i've been pining after some good old fashioned glitter to use to spruce up my depressing apartment. and maybe some to sprinkle on myself and be all like "long day at the office, tee hee".

alright that about brings you up to date for now. i've gotta head to a new part of town to be a tutor. wish me luck.

happy hump day!!

hi friends. i am feeling pretty darn well. i've learned a lot about myself this past year, and i feel as though it's all finally coming together in a way that makes me more well rounded and well adjusted. i've slowly come to terms with some of the stressful situations that have been obfuscating my sense of wellbeing, which makes this spring feel like more than just an atmospheric change; instead, an emotional and psychological shift that i can feel welling up from my core. spring break helped to solidify this by once again bringing me back to my roots and reminding me of what's important: family, friends, and love. always love. the love of family and friends that overcomes the pain and hurt of life. my skin feels like my own again and that feels good

daffodils

the daffodils are here. we are happy over at this house.

she turned to the sunlight
and shook her yellow head,
and whispered to her neighbor:

 'winter is dead'.

here comes the bride!

i want to dedicate this post to my dear friend courtney, who got hitched without a hitch this past weekend in STL! it was a beautiful ceremony and i was so blessed to be a part of it! She made a stunning bride who was organized, levelheaded, and the most chill bride i've ever seen. i'm not surprised, because courtney has always been my most reasonable, put together, and no fuss friend. she's good at planning for rainy days and therefore isn't fazed when things crop up. she is encouraging, kind, loyal, and oh so deserving of a happily ever after [which began on the 17th!].

pre-wedding festivities:
wedding day!
the only redeeming part of having a 7:15am flight the day after the wedding:
all in all, the wedding weekend was a huge success, and i even got some studying done. courtney and dan, thanks for letting me be a part of your big day. i look forward to being your friend for forever! i can't wait for you to pop out some babies for me to spoil rotten!

to my family

dear family:
thank you for welcoming me home. it's the exact nourishment my soul needed.
i don't know how you do it, but you meet me exactly where i am.
i know i'm hard to love sometimes, but thank you for loving me anyway.
thank you for raising me from a stinking cute baby to a more or less okay young woman.
thank you for loving eleanor like a [great]granddog/[great]niece dog. she loves you too.
thanks for supporting me and helping me to become more than i ever could be alone.

what a difference a day makes!

today was much better. on my way to ambulatory care i walked about 6 blocks through very nw dc . . . for a few blocks i felt like i was plucked up and transported to johnson county ks with the quaint clapboard houses, manicured lawns, starbucks and crate and barrel lining the streets. i allowed my mind to escape back to the midwest and imagined what i'd be up to this weekend if i was there. perhaps there would be dinner in liberty with family, and maybe some westport fun with friends. we'd drink boulevard on the patio and listen to the crickets and chat about life. tomorrow morning i'd probably go to target and take the princess to agility class and read a book. it would be so lovely. but here i am in my little apartment-hole-in-the-ground facing a nasty mess and pages of papers to write and lectures upon lectures to study. but that's ok because i'm finally where i ought to be. life is good.

in other news, last weekend was babber's masters graduation from public policy school! michelle and i got to go and cheer her on. we are so proud of our mistress! [feminine form of master? ok you're right i didn't think so]

happy weekend, friends! i hope it is full of fun and happiness.

we love you all!

a promised dose of cute

[i hope that ellie's cuteness overrides my laziness in not weeding in between the patio tiles . . .]

i'm back, no big deal :)

sorry for the long absence! ooooops.

since we last talked, i passed sdr (horray happiness!), had a lovely spring break in kc, and started a course called head and neck at school. the head and neck are complicated areas of the body for sure! there are many nerves and blood vessels snaking about and supplying a multitude of muscles.

anyway, about spring break! i headed to kc with little e in tow and we had a wonderful time catching up with family and friends alike.
sorry for the brevity . . . must go learn more! will update more tomorrow!

p.s. tonight there's supposed to be a good old fashioned thunderstorm . . . lovely!

happy birthday to auntie zinnia!!!

it is my dear auntie cassy's birthday today, so i wanted to dedicate this post to her. she is a lovely, passionate, caring, and energetic lady who inspires me all the time. whether it is by standing up for her convictions, growing beautiful flowers, seeing the good in everyone, encouraging those around her to reach their potential, or just whipping up an amazing vegetarian dinner, she makes me feel so lucky to be her niece.
a.c. - i'd be nowhere without you. thank you for everything that you do - ellie and i love you more than you can know!!!

it was a beautiful day

hey there friends. i know you're all pretty concerned about my short disappearance from the blog world. ugh every time i say the word blog i feel like such a nerd.

but it's ok. i'm writing on a blog. whatever. if you think i'm a nerd then stop reading . . .

alright, you're still reading which means you're interested in what i have to say on my blog and therefore are just as nerdy as i am for writing said blog.

. . . pause for a second while i go microwave some pizza . . .

back!!! i wanted to tell you about my beautiful day(s). so, the other day i received news of passing my gastrointestinal class . . . waaahoo! there were a few days in there when i was pretty nervous about not passing gastrointestinal. because it was a close call. but in the end, i pulled through.

today was pretty fun in general because i slept in, and then had one of my first clinical experiences in med school. i was assigned to a pediatrician who practices a few miles north. i had a really nice time observing, taking medical histories, and practicing physical skills like ear and pulmonary exams (because as it turns out, children either come in with an ear infection, pneumonia, or the flu). my preceptor (the pediatrician) was really nice, too.

then i went out for drinks with old and new friends - it was such a lovely time! but what really stuck with me from my evening was the interactions i had during my transit journey to get across town. on my way, i had an interesting chat with a gentleman sitting across from me on the bus. i don't know if he was on mood altering drugs or was simply in an altered state of mind, but he fixed his dark eyes on me and asked who won, adam or eve? is monogamy possible? what is the answer to life? i just smiled and said that's pretty deep for the bus, and i don't know the answer. after we were finished talking, i pulled out some notes to study during my down time. he got my attention again after i'd been studying a few minutes and held up his palms and said relax. just relax. he caught my eye once more and gave me a knowing look and said - you just need to relax! i smiled and silently agreed.

then i hopped off the bus in an unfamiliar and dark part of town - oops the silly quadrant system/repeating street #s of this city got the best of me again. instead of trying to figure it out, i hailed a cab. it's my default these days, especially when i feel lost in the dark. i said can you take me to this bar, and he said sure. he had some fun music playing, and i asked about it. he said it was from ghana. i smiled and nodded my head along with the beat. he turned around at a stop light and explained - the song is about feeling empowered because there's a God who loves you. that made me smile more.

then i met my friends for drinks and catching up. how fun! then i got into a cab to go home. this sweet cab driver told me all about the engineering classes he was taking. how he loves math and science, and how he is happy to be here in the states to have these opportunities. but we also talked about the road the us is on - budget crises and such. and how we both are (very cautiously) optimistic for our nation's future.

what a wonderful world it can be, when you get to meet so many interesting people in one day. it's a reminder that there is so much to be learned about every person, if you remember to ask.

xoxo,

k and  lil e
