marchy march

march came in that winter like the meekest and mildest of lambs, bringing days that were crisp and golden and tingling, each followed by a frosty pink twilight which gradually lost itself in an elfland of moonshine

mm srry

hi friends. what's up? sorry about the lack of anything substantial lately. usually when i'm out walking about doing my things i compose potential blog posts in my head that sound ahhhwesome, but then when it's time to sit and tap it out, i think of better things i should be doing [sending emails! prepping for teaching! learning things! watching steven colbert and hoping that there will actually be a "south carolina serious, classy republican debate" on animal planet!] and/or i think all the ideas i previously thought up to chat about with you guys would sound LAME in print. this isn't an excuse. i just wanted you to know what is up, and have an excuse to post some more pictures. that's what you're interested in anyway, right?

do you want to know something??

these are people that i love. and they love me back, to boot.

how does one girl get so lucky?

i'm missing everyone back home right now. thanks for the wonderful summer! above are photos from my mom's birthday party - it was  great way to wrap up my terrific vacation. [you'll notice the vegetarian corn dog - i was in heaven!]

in other news, we've survived a earthquake and a hurricane recently. neither proved to be a big deal for dc, but thanks for all the good thoughts and the prayers! i really really appreciate everyone's concern with calls and texts and emails.

i'm just trying to stay afloat in terms of school and all the miscellany that i need to attend to [it never seems to end, does it?] but i'm trying to stay positive because in the end, happiness comes from within [but it also doesn't hurt to have lil miss eleanor being cute all the time and some quality friends giving me time, smiles, and encouragement]. in the end, everything and everyone on the periphery will fade away and only love will remain. probably.

xoxo,

kate and the princess

i feel the earth move

[under my feet]

i was finally doing my piles of neglected dishes and then there was an earthquake.

maybe i shouldn't mess with the natural order of things???

we miss colorado

the video is of eleanor demonstrating her excellent "doggie paddle" stroke. it turns out that she is quite the little swimmer! we purchased the kiddie pool this summer because the heat wave made it all the way to colorado, only it was worse there because most people don't have ac due to the typically temperate summers that don't usually require it . . . anyway, i just wanted to post some cute pictures of the cutest dog alive. back to the books!

sweet rain

i love sitting cozy in my basement nook while a cajillion raindrops pour down and the air vibrates with the force of the thunder. the thunder here isn't the same as in the midwest - it's less uproarious [perhaps a little less sure of itself?] but that's ok. it's a taste of home. sometimes i just want to put on my bikini and lay on my patio and take a shower in the pure rain. except that it's not pure, probably. it's probably full of chemicals that are bad for humans to put on their skin. oh well. it's just the price we pay for being industrialized. worth it? maybe the verdict's still out on that one.
later, alligators. i must write a paper on the role of community health centers in reducing the cost of healthcare. i'm going to tell you all about my thoughts on the health care system as it is and how i think it should be - another time.

xoxo

kate and ellie [the princess who won't step a toe out into the rain]

i love this time of year the most

except that it's hard to focus on the beautiful weather with all of the indoor studying to be done. but occasionally we get out in the clean air [except that i use the term clean loosely because i always see the ribbons of pollution streaming from the low flying planes that constantly crisscross my portion of the sky].
this week is going to be especially nuts, with [probably] three days of getting dressed up to go to clinical stuff, one day with an "evidence based medicine" [statistics, barf] class and then the longest two hours of my life during a health care reform small group [i love the topic, but this particular group session feels like it lasts for 10 years each time] as well as brain lab. not to mention studying. which is important too.

well i'm glad to be back, and we'll chat more later for sure. now i need to go do my piles of homework, horray!

tornado watch

hey team! ellie and i are reporting from the tail end of a tornado watch for dc. i'm fairly certain that we won't see tornadoes in our region, but if we do then we are quite prepared since we come from hurricane alley, the heart of 'merica (i'm not super proud to claim missouri today, because of this atrocity. i'm not ready to talk about it yet).

happier news is that i filled out a 5 minute survey on diversity at my school and obtained a $15 itunes gift card as a thank you! love it. but what to purchase? i need your feedback! i don't want to waste my free money. should i get the new florence + the machine album? fleet foxes? death cab for cutie? netters neuroscience flashcards for my ipod? feel free to voice your opinion!

also i just did my obligatory etsy search for cute craft items applicable to my current module. apparently the crafting community greatly enjoys brains. my search yielded many cute results!
(arteries of brain look sort of like a monster)
brain slugs
brain skull cap! ingenious!
soap
anyway, that's all. i'm going to learn things now to try to distract myself from abused puppies and possible tornadic events.

much love,

kate and the princess

ps this is what i did to my toe before the Easter brunch (which is a tale for another post) (my toe bled more and felt way worse than the picture shows) (but we all know that i can be a bit of a whiner)
