keeping my cool

ok, i'm sitting in the library now trying to eat lunch and keep my mind off the impending afternoon. wait, what? oh that's right. we begin our gross anatomy lab this afternoon. As a little background info, i became a vegetarian in part because i get a little a lot creeped out being around dead things, therefore i certainly don't eat dead things. so as you could imagine, the thought of touching and cutting into a dead person makes my stomach turn and my brain go a little fuzzy. i'm choking down a pb&j and a snickers bar to try to decrease my chances of passing out. however i think this might increase my chances of vomiting. place your votes in the comments area about how you think this will go. i'll fill you in later :)

i hear what some of you are saying. the chance to have hands on experience with a human is valuable. we'll see. some of you might also be saying, didn't you know what you were getting into when you began this journey to med school? well, have you heard of denial?

as for now i wish i could spend the afternoon happily studying the clinical uses of genetics. but alas. i go forth to conquer my fears and misgivings*. thank you for your cyber support.

xoxo,

k

augh today

hey hey friends. i was holding off on making a blog update because i figured i would have a ton to update you on after my fun day today. my plans were to go to the pumpkin patch and apple farm with my dc friends and choose pumpkins, pick apples, and come back to carve pumpkins, watch the chiefs, and eat veggie chili and apple pie. but alas, we all know what happens to the best laid plans. i woke up too late for church due to my recent difficulties with falling asleep at appropriate hours, and then when i was getting ready for the pumpkin patch poor little e vomited on my sheets. after throwing the sheets in the washer, e and i took a nap and i decided to skip the pumpkin patch and join my friends after for carving and dinner. e and i woke up after a nice nap to a flood in the apartment. the washing machine croaked and spewed water all over the place. my bedroom carpet is soaked through, and the water made it all the way to the living room where it made a few lovely puddles. i got to spend the last 7 hours mopping, scrubbing, and cleaning up the aftermath (and you all know how i feel about manual labor) (although i should be honest: my landlady did most of the heavy duty work with the shopvac and the carpet cleaner. i have to give her props for being an awesome landlady).

all that to say: its funny how you can be so excited for a fun day, and then life happens. ah well. i'm learning how to roll with the punches. and maybe now my insomnia is cured, because i am exhausted. i'm sleeping well tonight. instead of a fun post with lots of pictures of friends having an awesome time, it's just me sitting on the couch having organic chinese food and trying to summon the strength to stand up and clean more. bleargh.

here's a cute pic of e in her new sweatshirt. it is a little too big but i'll hem it at some point. or take it home over christmas so e's grandma can do it :)
i hope your sunday was awesome. i am sure my next post will be happier!

medicine?

<({disclaimer: there are few pictures in this post due to the lack of feedback re: what sort of new camera i should purchase!? if i don't start getting constructive feedback all the pictures will go away because my phone camera is not up to par. and surely i'll soon run out of memory on it!})>

hey blog friends!

today for the first time i got to help with patient care {since receiving a fancy white coat} @ the med school's free health clinic. it was a pretty interesting experience - honestly i think it helped me and the other first year students more than it helped the patients. we were able to take vital signs and chief complaints, then present patient to a second year. then, the first year + second year see the patient again and present to a 3/4 year, then finally the 1st, 2nd, and 3/4 year see the patient yet again, then present to the real doc who sees the patient again and helps everyone decide on the treatment plan. so the patient answers the same questions like 4 times, and is usually there for hours before given a course of treatment. but, they get free treatment and we get experience, so i guess it's mutually beneficial. it is in stark contrast to the free health clinic in kansas city where we saw high volume of patients with few learning experiences. i did feel like i had an edge due to my experience working at kc free (love that place!) so that was nice.

finally, after seeing the patients, we got to practice giving shots by administering flu vaccines to each other. pretty neat. i won't say i'm an expert at giving shots now, but at least now i'm slightly more competent. next time i'll tackle phlebotomy. we'll see. don't forget to get your flu vaccine, everyone! flu season approaches :)

oh, and ps: if you thought i got through an entire patient clinic without doing anything clumsy or stupid, you were wrong! i sliced my finger open on the height ruler on the old fashioned scale. and, as you can imagine, i'm super paranoid about open wounds and patient care. so there's that. if i drink enough wine, hopefully it'll purify my blood regardless of whatever pathogens might have crept in from the metal ruler. or at least dull my obsessive/compulsive tendencies . . . meh?

much love,

k, e, & and one sore, vaccinated shoulder

ps here is a flipping cute sleeping pup with her face smashed against the bird pillow:

nothing in this world can take the place of persistence:

talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. the slogan "press on" has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race. -cal coolidge

hopefully that's true.

anyhow, in school we've moved on to molecular genetics. it's pretty ok. it's sort of a break between hardcore science and upcoming bouts of anatomy memorization and (eeeeekkk) gross anatomy labs. so that's pretty nice. here are some pictures of some friends and me being science nerds during undergrad, speaking of genetics:

today is my grammy's 89th birthday. she is a wonderful, kind, firecracker of a lady. happy birthday, grandma! i love you so, so, so much!

i talked to my colorado fam today on skype for the first time. let's just say, it was a giggle and a half. we love technology. even when we're a few years late picking up on it. lolz. i see many more funny encounters in our future.

eleanor the pup is too much. here is a silly story: she dropped her elliephant squeaky toy in the TOILET, and she knows it's currently in the bathroom soaking in soapy water. therefore, she is scratching on the the bathroom door, whining and crying that her horrible human mother will not give her the toilet water ball. what a silly little nor nor!

otherwise, i don't have much to say. life is life. and puppies are cute:
all the love in the world,

p.s. is it just me, or is it so funny that this is a fisher-price childrens toy called a "crock block"?
who comes up with these names?

why i'm a vegetarian

i don't want to stop heartbeats.

a diet without animal meat can be sufficient and complete nutrition.

eleanor.

and finally, nick really pushed me in that direction. he's a thoughtful and convicted guy, and when he starts something he goes all in. so it was with vegetarianism. he made the decision and hasn't wavered (whereas i am weak, but mean well). he's been a good example for me to make better health and ethical decisions. i appreciate it so, so much.

in that vein, i decided the other day to try vegetarian bologna. (my cravings for meat tend to be for the grossest most sketchy sorts - bologna and hot dogs) it did not disappoint. it made a fabulous sandwich with whole wheat bread, cheese, lettuce and spicy mustard. the spices mimic the bologna flavor perfectly, and it's a great source of protein.
give it a try. you just might like it!

finally, here's a picture of the cute pup looking cute:

i am having sunchips right now. the bag really is {quite loud}. but i don't mind, frito lay!

i just found out that frosted mini wheats have gelatin as one of the main ingredients. i'm pretty upset.

i have such a funny dog. i took her out to play fetch on the patio due to the beautiful weather, and she took the ball and sat by the door to be let back inside so she could hide the ball under the furniture. below is a video of her with her precious ball after it accidentally landed on top of her room. she's pretty smart if you ask me. (ps many apologies for the sideways video. my techie knowledge is not awesome)

i have to confiscate the balls she plays with after a while due to the hiding, burying, and scavenging behaviors. you can see them below on the dresser, which is where they go after i've reached my threshold of tolerance.
e's favorite balls

30 rock was so funny this week. my new favorite insult: i wish you weren't such a houston foreclosure of a human being

i booked my flights for christmas break. i am getting so excited. i'm going to spend a whole week with colorado family, skiing and shopping and playing games and relaxing. then i'm going to be in kc (midwest represent!) from dec 27th until jan 2. pencil me in! it's going to be e.p.i.c. (will someone in kc please save me some bob's 47 that i can drink when i get in town?!?) (or just mail me some now?!?)

ok, with that i'm going to leave you with a unbelievably cute picture of a bumble-E.

xoxo,
