a good browbeating

this quote from orrin hatch [npr] is exactly what's wrong with the debate about health reform.

it is not about something as petty as "the left's terms" vs. "the right's terms".

it is not about one side or another "winning" the health care debate.

it's about people.

it's about showing the world that we care enough about our citizens to ensure that they have a basic right to a healthy life.

that as a civilized society, we find it abhorrant that someone should die because they don't have enough $$$.

it's about patients. over politics.

end of soapbox for today.

love you, my darlings

patients over politics bus tour

it's kind of funny the way my last two posts were happy with a neat video and then sad, sad, sad with a poem because things are so senseless sometimes. blerg doesn't cover it when such sad losses occur [such as last friday's].

-----------------

anyway - other things. planning for the patients over politics bus tour is going well. that is something positive to look forward to - people are getting super excited to take a material action to show that the health care system as it is is unacceptable. sign the up for the virtual bus tour through the link, and if you'd like to join us on the tour we'd LOVE LOVE LOVE to have you!

alright. back to work. today is made better by the new passion pit album that was just released. love it!

we are born

we are
born like this
into this
into these carefully mad wars
into the sight of broken factory windows of emptiness
into bars where people no longer speak to each other
into fist fights that end as shootings and knifings
born into this
into hospitals which are so expensive that it’s cheaper to die
into lawyers who charge so much it’s cheaper to plead guilty
into a country where the jails are full and the madhouses closed
into a place where the masses elevate fools into rich heroes

happy video

i woke up this morning with a major case of the crankies. my uterus was cramping forcefully and i had that once per month feeling that the entirety of the world was probably definitely plotting to make me say 'blerg'. but then i got to work, drank some coffee, and watched this video.

today will be ok :)

[disclaimer: i'm not an emoticon sort of person, but i found it apropos in this sitch]

on wednesdays i finally write a post

my kryptonite is a brand new puppy cam here. this one is especially wonderful because these puppies are destined for a life of assisting veterans - helping their trainers overcome ptsd and their future owners who have mobility impairments. omg. warm fuzzy overload.

other happinesses this mid-week:
trader joes feeds me really delicious food. it fills my belly and my soul.

this was breakfast today. please and thank you.

i love her. look at that face.

and finally: i'm published!! two years of work have finally paid off in the form of an article in development. golly gee, that was a long time coming. i leave you with some of my confocal microscopy pictures:
the green things are progenitor cells (NC) that form craniofacial structures migrating from the precursor to the spinal cord (NT) in the chicken embryo.

happy wednesday, friends! stay cool [and stay dry, if you're in the dc area . . . my bad arm is throbbing, which means it must be storming]!

on acting all princessy

here's the princess. she's in quite a mood. i know that dog problems are people problems, and i fully accept that, but holy moly. she's been doing very sneaky things on purpose with a little impish glint in her eye. i think it is because we are way off her normal schedule, which for the school year involved only like 3 hrs per day tops of being alone in the apartment. with a full time job and another part time one this summer, i haven't been around nearly as much and certainly haven't exercised her sufficiently [vacay didn't help at all, either]. in that respect, i kind of get it. i think [at the risk of sounding all cesar milan] that she's craving some good old fashioned discipline and exercise. so, with that tidbit, i'm going to tuck us into bed and hopefully get up early enough for a solid dog walk before a long day of work work work.
