debbie downer

today was sort of sad. i never feel particularly happy after checking the news, but obviously today's news was worse than normal.

dear japan: i'm feeling so distressed about your loss. you'll be in the thoughts and prayers of millions across the globe.

it's the soberest feeling.

luckily, in this situation global neighbors tend to step up and offer a bit of help with damage control. but what if global neighbors recognized not only these acute events of destruction, but also the everyday destructions that occur below our industrialized and privileged radar?

anyway. that's deep enough for now. this post is dedicated to my Japanese reader that google stats tells me that i have. hello Japanese reader. i sincerely hope that you and your family are safe and sound. you're in my prayers. tomorrow morning day will break again in the land of the rising sun and in a few weeks the cherry blossoms will start to bloom and this too shall pass.

xoxo,

k and e

p.s. to make it an even worse news day, maryland's equality in marriage bill died today.

p.p.s. i hate leaving things on a sad note. happily, i've found my next knitting project courtesy of pickles:
knitted pouf stool - so cute

happy birthday to auntie zinnia!!!

it is my dear auntie cassy's birthday today, so i wanted to dedicate this post to her. she is a lovely, passionate, caring, and energetic lady who inspires me all the time. whether it is by standing up for her convictions, growing beautiful flowers, seeing the good in everyone, encouraging those around her to reach their potential, or just whipping up an amazing vegetarian dinner, she makes me feel so lucky to be her niece.
a.c. - i'd be nowhere without you. thank you for everything that you do - ellie and i love you more than you can know!!!

xoxo,

a grey kind of day

its a girl dog!
to spite me for my hopefully sunny post yesterday, it threatened rain all day today. but alas, it never came. i brought my favorite umbrella to school, and promptly lost it somewhere on campus. i wore rain boots around due to the forecast, but i only got funny looks and sweaty feet. it goes to show that you just never do know. xoxo

the sun tentatively stretches her beams down to my bit of the earth . . .

hopefully she'll stick around

daffodils in the yard! what a lovely surprise.
meanwhile, i'm in over my head with school. but rest assured, i just got a wonderful study aid in the mail. see if you can spot it in the following pictures :)
okay, that wasn't so hard to spot. its a jumbo jar of jelly bellies! aughh! happiness. i already feel a little sugar sick though. opps. also note my awesome new moustachioed pint glass. i got a pair.

happy fat tuesday! as for me and the pup, we plan on being boring and low key.

xoxo,

kate and ellie bellie

ignorance more frequently begets confidence

than does knowledge: it is those who know little, and not those who know much, who so positively assert that this or that problem will never be solved by science. - charles darwin

vliggity vlog

i made a vlog (vlog = video + blog) for your viewing pleasure last night when i was up late and trying to be productive. however, after i recorded this little bit and listened to it, i realized how annoying my voice is and then i was distracted the rest of the night! i am so sorry for anyone who has to hear it on a regular basis. it's kinda high, and squeaky. wow. i suppose i won't be making a vlog a regular occurrence around here. anyway. sorry in advance :)

(also i think i meant that "brain is a muscle" was a metaphor, not an analogy . . . i don't even know. who let me out of middle school??)

a post without a photo

i'm so sorry to make a post without a picture. it is so boring. i know y'all don't like to just read stuff. but honestly, i haven't even had the energy to snap a photo of anything, and i really haven't even been doing anything worth taking a photo of!

first off, there are people all around getting sick. ugh. it freaks me out. i do not like sitting within 3 rows of sick people in class because i have been known to have a flimsy immune system and because med school + being sick does not equal quality performance. believe it. i know what you're thinking though. if i do graduate, my field is all about sick people. that i have to touch. etc. well. that's why OB is appealing. most mommas delivering their babies aren't sick, just doing the natural thing.

do you want to know how i'm going to be busy the next 2 weeks before freedom (SPRING BREAK '11!)? i have 1 presentation, 1 rather large paper, 1 lecture exam over a fairly complex topic (sdr), and a lab exam (which will be impossible, if anything like past lab practical exams). the light at the end of the tunnel, however, is a leisurely break in kc where i will see family + friends + hometown. and drink irish ale. and eat dish pizza. and drink 32 oz of dos equis at los compas.

ok, back to class. we'll speak again soon.
